The case for boycotting Israel
-  Omar Jabary Salamanca (UGent, BDS)
Boycotts are historically a popular and grassroots form of protest against corporations, companies and states. In many cases they have proved to be an effective and powerful solidarity tool to defend and support oppressed peoples. For the last years the Boycott Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) campaign has managed to energized both the Palestinian struggle for liberation and a growing international solidarity movement radically opposed to Israel´s human right abuses. For many there are still open questions. Is BDS the right tactic? Is it effective? Why does it single out Israel? Won’t an academic boycott infringe on academic freedom and silence progressive Israeli academics? Why punish Israeli artists with a cultural boycott? Don’t art and music transcend politics?
Omar, researcher at Ghent University and active in the BDS-movement will try to answer these and other questions through an open and engaging conversation.
